The Practical Difference: Udyam Registration

If you don't have Udyam registration, you can only take a business loan - no MSME schemes apply. Getting Udyam is free, takes 15 minutes online (udyamregistration.gov.in), and is based on self-declaration of turnover and investment.

If you qualify as an MSME, get Udyam registered first. It unlocks cheaper credit, government tenders, subsidies, and faster bank processing.

MSME Definition (Updated)

  • Micro: Investment ≤ ₹2.5 Cr AND Turnover ≤ ₹10 Cr
  • Small: Investment ≤ ₹25 Cr AND Turnover ≤ ₹100 Cr
  • Medium: Investment ≤ ₹125 Cr AND Turnover ≤ ₹500 Cr

Manufacturing and services have the same thresholds since 2020.

When to Pick Each

Take a Business Loan if:

  • You're not Udyam registered (and can't be - turnover too large)
  • You need fast disbursement (3–5 days)
  • The amount is small (under ₹25L) and CGTMSE fees aren't worth the paperwork
  • You have property to mortgage and prefer LAP at lower rates

Take an MSME Loan if:

  • You're Udyam registered
  • You need ₹50L+ and want collateral-free
  • You can wait 10–14 days for CGTMSE processing
  • You want to access PMEGP / Pavala Vaddi / ECLGS benefits

Common Mistake

Applying for a regular business loan when you'd qualify for CGTMSE-backed MSME credit at 2–3% lower rate. We always check Udyam eligibility first.
